Claudia McGill: The first car I ever bought myself was a small brown car with a manual transmission. It tried hard but it didn’t have a lot of power to work with. I remember driving it to Boston and in one section of the trip, going through some hills, I had to get my speed up on the downhills to compensate for how the little car struggled up the ascents. Well, we made it, and I got 55 miles to the gallon, too. I still think of that car every time I go on a drive that includes steep roads. It had a lot of pluck.
