Look At Us

Here are some more tiles from that same burst of clay work I did a few months ago. These are faces, all about 2″ or so. Not too big. I used the technique of painting a solid color of underglaze, letting it dry, and then painting the features and scratching through to the undercoat.

This clay is not really very good for this technique, as it has a lot of grog  (it’s gritty, in other words). This is good for tile making as it helps them hold their shape without warping, but it’s not great for painting – a smoother surface is better. Well, it’s what I was using at the time, so…

    They do get the most interesting looks to them with just a few strokes, and that is why I keep making faces, over and over, I think, to see who emerges!

    Yes, you think, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, don’t you? Threw me when I first started doing clay and people talked about the grog in the clay!
