Cartoon Tiles

I’m not sure what made me put speech bubbles in my tile work, but that’s something I’ve been doing. You may remember seeing some earlier ones. And here are a couple more.

They are done on terracotta tiles that I rolled out, bisqued, and painted with a base layer of black Velvet underglaze. I then added the colors and scratched through to make the words and outlines. Fired at cone 06 in the final firing.

Thank you. I wasn’t sure if I liked including speech but now I’m happy about it. The thing to do is to let the little picture give me the idea and not try to illustrate something. I spend all my time in the car directing my husband so this one is from real life, though!

I love that the speech bubbles turn the tiles almost into frames from a comic book or graphic novel, like I want to see the preceding and following tiles to grasp the rest of the story.

I think this could be something that your illustrations would do really well…I know I’d be interested to see where you go with it…just saying…!!!

It’s funny because my kids work together to make comic books and graphic novels and I always think it looks like great fun and something I would enjoy but I just know I would get bored committing to drawing the same thing over and over, such as the same character, but I could indeed produce some intriguing little excerpts from incomplete stories.

Well, you and the kids could line yourselves up and each do a panel including this tile. Then it would be only one per person. But of course you don’t have to, but if you want to, you have my enthusiastic blessing!
