Fill the Paper

If you follow my Sometimes You Get So Confused blog you know I’ve been working on my penmanship. Anyway, during a recent practice writing session, I got sidetracked and drew my husband sitting in his chair.

The pen wanted to draw instead of write. Everyone needs a break from practice, right?

Thank you. You know, this kind of started as a doodle, maybe, but I liked the way the two parts, writing and line drawing, kind of cohered. I wonder if I can do it again, or was it the kind of thing you have to just let happen?

I always enjoy the combination of text and images, but this is really lovely. I studied Chinese in my youth and that was very helpful in improving my penmanship in English, being purposeful in my mark making. I enjoy playing around with my handwriting and would love to get better at lettering. I have a nice collection of art inks now and my dip pens are calling out again. I’m curious to see where your penmanship exploration takes you!

Thank you. I’m really enjoying trying to improve my handwriting and the focus on letters as shapes and words as combinations of these shapes, is really intriguing me, beyond whatever thing I might be writing. I have wondered if I might try more elaborate forms of writing, but for now I want to get a firm hand on these and then try to use it in art projects. And everyday life, of course!
